When young Lucille “Lucky” Standing fell in love with spirited Wilford “Wolf” Guindon at the Olney Boarding School in Ohio in 1947, she knew her life would be interesting. She had no idea that within three years they would move to a mountaintop in Costa Rica, start a dairy farm in the middle of the cloud forest, and begin raising their family of eight children in the Quaker community of Monteverde. Over the 75 years that followed, Lucky wrote daily in her diary, shared her unique life with her northern family through regular letters, and contributed her poetry and prose to local publications. She became a renowned artist specializing in pen and ink drawings of the tall strangler fig trees that shade the cow fields and mark the horizon of Monteverde.
Living with Lucky is a memoir created from her writings and musings, starting with the naŃ—ve observations of a young mother in a new world and evolving with age to a woman’s wisdom earned through trial and error. This is a book created through experience, struggle, and a singular love of life.
A companion piece to Kay Chornook and Wolf Guindon’s Walking with Wolf (Wandering Words Press, 2008).
